PurifiedRP/Game-Pioneers and plagiarism in GMod in general
In the Garry’s Mod community plagiarism and code stealing is a big problem. Just take a look at the above screenshot. The original addon is PointShop by _undefined but here it’s clearly renamed and modified for the Game-Pioneers private gain. Note that no credits are given to the original creator.
Before GPi (Game-Pioneers) there was PurifiedRP, also run by Steve/Phoenixf129. PurifiedRP was a DarkRP edit (originality, wee!) with a leveling system and multiple different systems that Steve claimed he made himself, examples being the taser (I worked on putting it onto the Mad Cow base, I can confirm this is the taser he claimed he made) and the Cannabis plant (Can confirm derived code). By then I was naive and though he actually had made everything himself when he, in reality, is a liar.
This is a common problem in the GMod community. Most of the code put out there is based on some other code somewhere and most “developers” doesn’t know that just because you can read the code you can’t modify and redistribute it. The code needs to be under an open license such as the GNU General Public License, a derivative of the MIT Licence or their own, like my Tiny Driplet Licence.
Legally you cannot sell that gamemode mod you have made for your server, hell, you can’t even modify it from a legal point of view.
This is more of a PSA to the Garry’s Mod community as a whole than a lengthy rant about copyright and it’s flaws (you could find it somewhere else) that as an original developer, put a license. As a modder, make sure you are allowed and don’t sell it without getting permission from everyone who have contributed. (Looking at you Steve, part of the PurifiedRP gamemode is mine and you didn’t even bother to ask me)
